Bill G. White

Born: 7/16/1933
Died: 2/5/2021
Age: 87
Community: Grand Blanc , MI

Bill was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on February 5, 2021. His wife was by his side as she always has been over the past 68 years.

Bill was born in Cambridge, Ohio 87 years ago to his Father and Mother, Henry Lee & Belle (Postlethwaite) White. He was born (on the kitchen table no less) into a family of five brothers (Leland, Gale, Donald, Bud and Robert) and one sister, Alene Riggs. They have all predeceased him. If you asked he would tell you that he was always his Mom’s favorite.

He was raised in Michigan and ended up graduating from Goodrich High School in 1950. His claim to fame was that he was quite the basketball player in High School.

In 1952 Bill fell in love with and married Dorothy (Buchanan) in Flint, Michigan. They had a true Christian based marriage. After Bill’s retirement you would oftentimes find them at the kitchen table holding hands and telling each other “I Love You”.

Shortly after their marriage Bill was drafted into the United States Army. He was assigned to guard the Iron Curtain in Germany during the Korean conflict. He rose in the ranks while he was there and was promoted to be his Staff Sargent’s assistant. He was proud of the time he served his Country.
When he returned home from the service Bill and Dorothy, together with several others in the Grand Blanc community, started Faith Lutheran Church in the theater downtown in 1956. Bill served in his church faithfully until he was no longer able. He was a devout Lutheran. We can’t even count the number of people he helped bring into Faith. Although he never made it known, the steeple on top of Faith Lutheran Church was placed by him. He always said that a church isn’t a church without a steeple pointing toward Heaven. Bill and Dorothy were the only Charter members remaining.

Bill and Dorothy had two children of their marriage: Melinda (Lindy) (Robert) Nicol and Mike (Lisa) White of Grand Blanc. They have four grandchildren, Jonathon (Tiffany) Conquest, Sarah Conquest (Stacey McNabb) and four great-grandchildren, Sean, Anna, Annabelle and Sophia.

After Bill’s discharge from the Army he began his career working for Yerkey’s Chevrolet in downtown Grand Blanc. He then moved on to Skaff Carpet & Furniture for several years. When he left Skaff’s he was the manager of the Furniture Store in downtown Flint. Bill then joined his brother in the Steel Erection business in 1976. They became General Contractors in 1978. In 1987 he bought out his brother and changed the name of the company to B.G. White Construction Company. Bill thoroughly enjoyed working in the construction business and came in every day until he suffered a stroke three years ago. That didn’t stop him though from asking his kids regularly, who have carried on the business, “How are things going at work and what jobs are lined up?” We always knew he may not be at the office but he was close by!

Bill was a true family man with a great sense of humor who enjoyed spending quality time with his family at their summer home. He enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the beautiful sunsets, smoking his tiparillo’s and doing crossword puzzles. He was an avid hockey fan and watched the Red Wings win four Stanley cups. His family meant the world to him and he cherished any time we could spend together. You always knew where you stood with him. If he was upset with you he would raise that one eyebrow and you knew you better shape up. Bill was quite an inspiration to his family and their friends. He was always willing to listen and gave great advice, if you asked for it.

A special THANK YOU to Bill’s caregivers, Tara, Susan, Cindy, Raedean, Tawana and Right-at-Home for all the special attention and care given to him.

Contributions in Bill’s name can be made to Faith Lutheran Church or the charity of one’s choice.
