Ronald Lee Wiles, 79, of Fenton, formerly of Midland, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, January 5, 2025, at Vicinia Gardens Luxury Retirement Living in Fenton. Born on March 9, 1945, in Alma, he was the beloved son of the William A. Wiles (late) and Audra (Brookens) Wiles of Midland.
On July 10, 1965, Ronald married the love of his life, Sandra Jean Lauer, in Hemlock, marking the beginning of a devoted and joyful partnership that spanned nearly six decades. He found his greatest happiness in being a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family meant the world to him, and he never missed an opportunity to express how proud he was of them.
Ronald was a man of many talents, endlessly curious, and always eager to learn something new. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran and later enjoyed a fulfilling career as a Distillation Technician with Dow Corning Corporation until his retirement in July 2000. Retirement, however, didn’t slow him down—it only gave him more time to pursue his many interests and passions.
Ronald’s hands were never idle. Whether tending to his bees and producing his own honey, crafting flyrods, bows, or muzzleloaders for hunting he poured dedication and care into everything he did. His love of nature and the outdoors led him to memberships in Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, and Mid-Michigan Bowmen where he found camaraderie among fellow sportsmen. An avid fisherman, hunter, cyclist, and marathon runner, he lived life with energy and enthusiasm.
Beyond his outdoor pursuits, Ronald’s artistic spirit shone brightly. He was a member of the Midland Folk Music Society and took great joy in sharing music with friends and family. His green thumb was evident in his skillful cultivation of African violets, which brightened his home and those of others.
Ronald’s warmth, kindness, and sense of humor touched the lives of all who knew him. He cherished his friends and was always ready with a story, a helping hand, or a smile. His enduring legacy is one of love, perseverance, and a life well-lived.
He is survived by his devoted wife Sandra; his children, Ronald Lee (Dawn) Wiles Jr. and Shannon Marie Gammill; and his adored grandchildren, Griffin Wiles, Noah Wiles, Ethan Gammill, and Connor Gammill. He also leaves behind his mother, Audra (Brookens) Wiles and his brother, William Craig Wiles, as well as countless friends and loved ones who will forever hold his memory dear.
A graveside service honoring Ronald’s life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 10, 2025, at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. Those wishing to honor his memory are asked to consider donations to Tunnels to Towers, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Trout Unlimited.
Ronald Lee Wiles was a true Renaissance man, a dedicated family man, and a loyal friend. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. |
