Oliver leaves, to cherish in loving memory, his wife of thirty-nine (39) years, Gloria J. McCoy-Jacobs; five (5) children, Tammy Hampton, Penny Smith, Anthony (Marlis) Settle, Arianna Ward, Aaron D.B. (Rocelle Robinson (soon to be) McCoy-Jacobs, and one son-in-law Roger (LaQuisha) Hill, seventeen (17) grandchildren and sixteen (16) great grandchildren; his beloved sister, Janet (Jim) Beedy, from Detour, Michigan; his ‘best childhood pal’ cousin, Gordon (Sue) Jacobs of Cedar Springs, Michigan; and other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Oliver died at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2023, quietly while sleeping. Family including grandchildren and great grandchildren, talked to, prayed for, touched, sang, and cried for him. He was a loving, caring, attentive husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather to all his family, and that love was reciprocated and demonstrated repeatedly by his family during his illness.
Oliver lived a life of service not only to his family, but also to his country and his community. He served at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS for four (4) years (1961-1965), then completed his college education at University of Michigan, Flint. He worked as a custodian from 1966-1970 for the Flint Community School District. Upon completing the educational requirements, he continued to dedicate his professional life to Flint Community Schools as an elementary and secondary level teacher and Community School Director from 1970-2006. He loved the Flint School System, and it loved him back. He retired in June 2006 after having a heart attack. He continued to play Blooper Ball in the teacher's retirement league for exercise, fun and fellowship.
Oliver was baptized and Gloria rebaptized in December 1983, into First Flint Seventh-day Adventist Church and went to Memphis, Tennessee, Gloria’s hometown to be married on December 27, 1983. The wedding was an absolute family affair. Oliver’s mother, Florence, was the pianist, the adult children were either groomsmen or bridesmaids, and the younger children from the family were their flower girl, watch bearer, and town crier. Eventually they transferred their church membership back to Fairhaven and have been members there ever since.
Oliver and Gloria combined two families when they got married; him with two daughters, her with two daughters and a son, then God blessed them with an additional son and daughter, Aaron and Ashli McCoy-Jacobs. Even though, since the wedding, the deaths of two of their daughters, Angela and Ashli has brought much pain, the births of the grandchildren and great grandchildren have brought much joy and thankfulness to God. They have loved, encouraged, supported, learned from, and leaned on God and each other for nearly 40 years and God has blessed and kept them.
They request your prayers for the family that they will always,
• Allow God to be the source of true wisdom, strength, guidance, and care
• Love God first and foremost,
• Hold on to His unchanging hand,
• Trust and obey Him only, and
• Share His love and truth with others.
Immediate loved ones who preceded him in death were his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth (Florence) Jacobs, two daughters, Angela Darlene Settle Thompson, Ashli Danielle McCoy-Jacobs Hill, and son-in-law Brian Keith Hampton.
