Mary Herweyer, of Flushing, MI, age 88, died at her home Saturday, April 30, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. A candy enthusiast and avid card player, her house was always filled with full bellies and laughter. Chocolate was her primary food group and dessert accompanied (or replaced) every meal. She was an avid traveler and cherished her annual trips to the Cayman Islands. Above all else, she loved her friends and family. Guests were welcomed with microwave popcorn, a fully stocked candy drawer, the dessert of the week, and her infectious smile. She was loved by all who met her.
Mary was born in Flint, MI on December 14, 1933, the daughter of Leo and Elsie (Kunitzer) Jacobs. She graduated from St. Matthew’s Catholic High School and married Carl Herweyer. Mary took great pride in her work and while raising three children, she taught comptometry in the evenings. She later worked as a Kelly Girl at General Motors. Mary made friends everywhere she went. She was a long-time parishioner at St. Robert’s Catholic Church, proud member of her sorority Beta Sigma Phi, and reluctant participant in all forms of exercise.
Mary is survived by her brother, Jim (Anette) Jacobs; children Ann (Ed) Jacks, Michael (Sandy) Herweyer, and Sue (Jeff) Faris; grandchildren, Rachel, Andrea, Patrick, Elise, David, Nathan, Maria, Megan, Isaac, and Scott; and great-grandchildren, Juniper and Fiona. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, and her parents.
A funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2022, at St. Robert Catholic Church. Fr. Jonathan Perrotta will officiate, and burial will follow at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Rossell Funeral Home and 10 a.m. Friday at the church until the time of the Mass at 11 a.m. A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rossell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society of Genesee County or St. Robert Catholic Church.
