WRIGHT, Verlon E. “Gene” – of Harbor Beach, age 86, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, October 18, 2021, after a lengthy battle with cancer and COPD. Funeral services will be held 11AM Thursday, October 21, 2021, at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio. Bro. Kim Bridges from Marmaduke First Baptist Church in Arkansas officiating. Burial in Birch Run Township Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4PM until 8PM, and Thursday from 10AM until the time of service at 11AM.
Gene was born August 26, 1935, in Marmaduke, Arkansas, to the late Jessie and Mattylee (Smith) Wright. He moved to Michigan when he was 17 and resided here ever since. Gene married Janet Palmer on December 24, 1974. He retired from General Motors in 1986. While there he worked for the UAW Local #651 as a committee man and shop committee man. After retirement, Gene owned Chandler’s Dirt Farm and Excavating in Otisville for several years. He retired to Harbor Beach and spent 22 winters in Arizona where his favorite hobby, detecting for placer gold was enjoyed. Gene also enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and building bird houses.
Surviving are: Wife, Janet Wright; Daughter, Brenda Drake of Flint; Son, Randall Wright of Flint; Stepson, Brett Beckley of Millington; Stepdaughter, Jodi Beckley of Fenton; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; Sister, Melva Sue Cooper of Arkadelphia, AR; Brother, Maurice “Doc” Wright of Davison. Gene was also preceded in death by: Daughter, Glenda Young; Sister, Marcy Yauger; Brother, Charles Wright.
