Robert (Bob) was a lifelong resident of Mt. Morris, MI as he was born at the family home located on Neff Rd to a large family. He was the youngest of six children. Robert was very close with all of his siblings but had a very special bond with his oldest brother Evan & his sister Kathrine. Growing up the family attend church at First Baptist in Mt. Morris, MI. As a young man he would help out by doing varies chores & tending to the livestock the family had to help get through the hard times. He would also help neighbors when they were in need of assistance.
Once Robert started school, he become very interested in playing sports & signing. He played football, basketball, track & baseball. His love for baseball grew over the many years so much that he helped to develop baseball programs in the community, coached, scouted, mentored & so many other things. Over the many years he touched so many lives of youngsters & helped them all via his love for baseball. He coached baseball for many years in both the City of Flint East & West leagues & also was an assistant coach at Mott Community College. During that time the teams that he coached won many championships, but he was so humble he always praised each & ever player giving them the credit for each & every win. He even took a time off from baseball & coached the football team at Southwestern during the early 1990’s. During his school years Robert was a National Guard “weekend warrior” & upon graduation from high school he fully enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany & served during the Korean Conflict (War). He has told a few stories over the years about his time in the Army & as a family we are very proud & feel so honored to know that he gave so much of himself during those times to help make the world better.
In November of 1956 he went to a local restaurant called Varsity Drive-in with friends & met the love of his life LouAnn McPherson. They were wed on April 27, 1957. One short year later the first of five children were welcomed into this world. Robert went to what was once called GMI now Kettering University to learn engineering. When he completed that he went to work down in Mount Clemens working for Rollins Machine Shop while living in Hazel Park. A few short months later the family had to move back home & he went to work for what was then called Anchor Motor Freight as a car hauler. Eventually he went to work for Complete Auto Transit (Ryder) hauling cars all over the countryside including Canada. He retired from Complete Auto in 1994 but couldn’t sit still very long. He went back to work transporting people this time working for CLD out of Flushing. After a few years him & LouAnn decide to open their own shuttle service. When he was younger, he was a car salesman working for Knickerbocker Olds, Turnsteads & also a bar tender at a little bar located on Dort Hwy by Dodge Rd. Over the years he also worked for one of his very best friends Fred McAndrew making deliveries for Vic Bond Sales to the many different locations. He was always there to help family, friends, neighbors & strangers when they were in need.
He was very active within the community. He held several positions with the local Jaycee chapter in Mt. Morris. He was also a School Board member for several years. Robert was a Deacon for many years at First Baptist Church in Mt. Morris, Michigan. While working for Complete Auto Transit he was also a active Teamster Union member. Once he finally decided to fully retire, he took up bowling again & was actively bowling two days a week. He was doing what he loved meeting new people & listening to their stories. One of those days he enjoyed bowling with his oldest son Rob. He would always offer advice on what someone could do to help their game get better even at the bowling alley.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 66 years LouAnn Williams (McPherson) along with his children Robert Williams, Jr. Lori Williams, Ronald (Mary) Williams, Bill (Char) Kirby II & Lydia Scheitler (Williams).
