Curtis Thompson Leece
Died Oct. 14, 2010
Born October 15, 1932 in Detroit Michigan to the late Mildred and Perry Curtis Leece, Curt passed away on October 14, 2010 surrounded by family at his home. Married to Judith Lynne Leece for 38 years, they have 5 children: Bill (Nancy) Link of Saginaw; Perry (Kelly) Link of Saginaw; Cathy (Dan England) Leece of Gilbert, MN; David (Kathy Brewer) Leece of Bay City; MaryAnn (Tom) Knowles of Holland; 7 grandchildren: Billy, D.J., Tommy, Carly, Sam, Garrett and Max, and 2 great-grandchildren: Hannah and Nathan. Curt also has one brother: Jack (Pat) Leece of Paso Robles, CA.
A life-long learner, Curt was a graduate of Arthur Hill High School and furthered his education at the Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in Industrial Photography in 1952. Curt later completed studies in engineering and computer programming and served as adjunct faculty at Saginaw Valley State University.
In 1953, Curt began serving his country in the Armed Forces as an instructor for The Artillery School for Electronics and Ballistic Meteorology. He was honorably discharged from active duty in the US Army in 1956. He continued service as a Captain in the active reserves until 1964.
Active in the Saginaw community, Curt was a member of the Saginaw Symphony Board of Directors, President of the Saginaw Art Museum Board of Trustees, and Vice-President of the Saginaw Hall of Fame Board of Directors.
Curt retired from The Saginaw News in 1997, after 40 years. He began his career as a staff photographer, and became Photo/Graphics Editor. Long before the dawn of digital cameras, Curt recognized the potential of electronic image editing. In an article published by The Saginaw News in 1960, Curt outlined his thoughts on digital photography as the not too distant future of photojournalism.
Recognizing the need for a more efficient process, Curt pioneered a revolutionary editing system for The News based on video technology. Design and editing software, written by Curt, was used by Ohio, Missouri and Indiana Universities to teach layout design.
After retiring to Northport, Curt and Judie became very involved in the Northport Community Arts Center (NCAC) where Curt was a Board Member and facilities vice-president. Curt was the technical expert behind many musical and theatre productions at the NCAC. He combined his love of classic movies and technology to establish a popular movie night called “The Flix”.
Curt loved the Northport community and the arts and spent countless hours supporting the NCAC with his creativity, enthusiasm and interest in technology. In 2009, Curt received the honor of the control booth dedication in his name.
Memorials may be made to The Leelanau Conservancy, The Leelanau Township Community Foundation, or the Northport Community Arts Center. Friends are welcome to join the family at the Northport Community Arts Center for a memorial celebration of Curt’s life on Saturday, November 6th, at 3:00 pm.
