Phillip Charles “Phil” Cumper, born June 15, 1943, passed away on April 22, 2026, at home with his wife, Bonnie, beside him. He was a loving, faith-filled, and creative man whose life reflected devotion, and commitment to family, and a steady spirit of teaching and coaching others.
Phil was born to Floyd and Dorthy Cumper and grew up with the values of hard work, respect, and passion that would guide him throughout his life. He graduated from Mt. Clemens High School and later answered the call to serve his country honorably in the United States Army, where he was proud to be part of the 101st Airborne. His service was a meaningful chapter in a life marked by duty, courage, and strength.
After his military service, Phil built a 35-year career with General Motors, from which he retired in 2012. He approached his work with dedication and integrity, earning the respect of those who knew him. Beyond his career, he was also deeply involved in the world of horses, where he bred, raised, and showed several champion Quarter Horses. His love for animals, especially horses, reflected both his patience and his appreciation for excellence.
Phil was also known as the CEO of Phil’s Angel’s, where he bred and sold millions of angel fish nationwide. His creativity and entrepreneurial spirit were evident in this unique and successful venture, which brought joy and beauty into many homes across the country.
In his personal life, Phil enjoyed golf, fishing, and spending time in the garden. He was an avid gardener who took pleasure in watching things grow, and that same nurturing spirit was evident in the way he loved his family and cared for those around him. He was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Otisville, where he lived out his Christian beliefs. His faith was central to him later in life, and he trusted in the promises of God throughout his journey.
Phil is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his children, Brad (Cami) Cumper and Lonny (Annette) Burns; his siblings, Duane (Vicki) Cumper and Paul (Donna) Cumper; and his grandchildren, Emma, Ethan, Lauryn, Isabel, Peyton, Jessica, Matthew, David, Cindi, and Nicole. He also leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him joy and pride. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Dorthy, and his son, Scott.
Those who knew Phil will remember his steady presence, and the love he gave so freely. He was a man who valued family, honored his commitments, and lived with a heart anchored in faith. His life was a blessing to many, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
