Bison, Theodore Thomas of Flushing, age 80, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Per his wishes, memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
Theodore was born in Flint, Michigan on January 31, 1938, the son of John and Anna (Nels) Bison. He married his high school sweetheart, Helen Summerfield on August 16, 1958, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Ted’s fondest memories growing up were being a Boy Scout and attending Camp Tapico with his friend, Ron DeWitt. He also loved working at the Flint Golf Club where he began working as a caddy at 11 years old.
Ted graduated from Bendle High School in 1956, as class Salutatorian. He was a star football player for four years and received three full ride scholarships to MSU, U of M, and Dartmouth. He chose MSU because he wanted to play for Duffy Daugherty and received both his Bachelor and Master degrees from Michigan State.
Ted was a Math Teacher for 36 years, retiring in 1996. He taught for Livonia Public Schools and Carman- Ainsworth. He coached football, wrestling, Jr. Varsity golf and taught driver’s education. In 1977, in addition to teaching, he became a licensed builder. He loved his tools and always said “if they made a tool I want to own it.” Ted still kept his sense of humor even after several falls that resulted in head injuries.
He was a member of the Flushing School Board, the Lions Club, and the Flushing Masonic Temple. He taught Sunday School for 10 years at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Ted is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen; five children, Michelle and husband Paul Compo, Laurie and husband Leonard Wittbrodt, Kristy Moesch, Jennifer and husband Scott Staley, David and wife Lisa Bison; 15 grandchildren who know him as “Buster”, Jacob, Meghan, Shane, Tricia, Janet, Danielle, Molly, Matthew, Lauren, Allie, Nathan, Thomasin, Hadley, Vance, Myles; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Bison. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Joan Bison; and brother, William Bison.
A special thank you to his “son”, Leonard Wittbrodt for his many hours of support and companionship.
