James D. Barckholtz

Born: 3/17/1943
Died: 12/9/2022
Age: 79
Community: St. Charles, MI

James D. Barckholtz, a lifelong resident of St. Charles, died peacefully on December 9, 2022, surrounded by his family at Union Court Assisted Living.

Jim was born on March 17, 1943, in Saginaw, Michigan, the second of three children born to Clifford and Adeline (Dobshinsky) Barckholtz. Following graduation from St. Charles High School, Jim met the young Nanette Blair in Saginaw where they both worked for a time. Jim teased Nan relentlessly, and she eventually agreed to go on a date -- two years later, on September 26, 1964, Jim and Nan were married in Chesaning. They built their home in St. Charles on the golf course, and together raised three children. Jim loved to golf, and he took great pleasure in watching his sons play.

Jim was devoted to his family and dedicated to his work. He looked up to and respected his parents and wanted to stay near to them as they grew older. From a young age, he planned to follow in his father’s footsteps, but was encouraged to be a pharmacist by his mother. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Ferris State University and enjoyed a long career as a pharmacist. For over forty-five years he worked at St. Luke’s (now Covenant) Hospital until his retirement in 2007, as well as Bob’ Pharmacy in St. Charles. Jim’s attention to detail and meticulous nature helped him to excel in pharmacy, and his dedication and passion for the work was inspirational to many, including his two sons who have become pharmacists.

For many years after retirement, Jim and Nan spent winters in Arizona, where Jim loved to hike and climb, ride bikes, and explore. He also played basketball and was a huge Piston’s fan. He enjoyed listening to music and dancing along.

Jim was quiet and reserved, but a kid at heart. His love language was joking and teasing, and he became outgoing and cheerful around his kids. He was overjoyed when his first grandchild arrived and adored them all. In recent years, special memories were made when his great-grandchildren would visit him at Union Court, where they would sing, dance, and feed him french fries. Jim loved spending time with his family and helping in any way he could. When Jill built her home, he insisted on helping with everything, including the wallpaper, landscaping, and staining. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family.

Jim will be missed by many, especially his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Nan Barckholtz; daughter, Jill (Greg) Wachowicz; sons, Todd (Jean) Barckholtz and Tim (Sandra) Barckholtz; grandchildren, Nathan (Gena) Wachowicz, Katie (Jordan) McQueen, Blair Wachowicz, Taryn Barckholtz, Austin Barckholtz, Sierra and Sedona Barckholtz; great-grandchildren, Henry, Maggie and Cooper McQueen; brother, Lee (Kathie) Barckholtz; sister, Kay Backus, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Adeline.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, December 12, 2022 at 6 PM at McGeehan Funeral Homes, 209 Entrepreneur Drive, St. Charles. Friends may visit the funeral home on Monday, December 12th from 2 PM until the time of the service. Burial will take place privately at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Merrill on Tuesday.
