Mary Virginia Mathias, 94 of Toledo, a Registered Nurse with lifelong and loving passion for her family and growing flowers, passed away December 12, 2010. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-6p.m at the Dowling Funeral Home, 7509 New West Road at King, (King Rd between Central and Sylvania Ave.) Toledo, 419-841-8111. The family will also receive guests Friday at 11a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with her Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon in the church. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Mary graduated from Holland H.S. and was also a 1937 graduate of St. Vincent School of Nursing. She loved her work as a nurse. In 1965 she was assigned to new cardiac unit when St. Vincent open the largest such unit in the country and she was the first to defibrillate a patient. She retired from St. Vincent Hospital in 1980. Mary loved gardening and her yard, front to back, was filled with a variety of colorful flowers. She was a mother of four, grandmother of eight and great grandmother of three. Mary was born October 27, 1916 in Springfield, Ohio to George and Emma (Bader) Hartman. In 1946 she married Joseph Harvey Mathias (1910-1991). They raised their family in Blessed Sacrament Parrish of which Mary was a member for over 65 years. She was also a member of the Rosary Altar Society and the Legion of Mary. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, Charles Hartman, sisters, Marie Spears and Elizabeth Jaffke. Mary is survived by her children, James I. (Joan) Mathias of Goshen, IN, Martin A. (Rosalyn) Mathias of Bowling Green, OH, Thomas O. Mathias of Toledo, OH and Sharon S. (Bret) LaPointe of Rio Rancho, NM. and a brother George L. (Glenna) Hartman of Toledo. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, Gwen and Marc Mathias, Kirsten Knull and Gina Mathias, Robert and Philip Mathias, Amy and Lisa Thompson as well as 3 great grand children Chase, Hunter and Scarlet Knull. The family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice for their compassion and care in Mary’s final days. They would particularly like to thank the exceptional staff at the Parkcliffe Alzheimer’s Community for more than 6 years of professional and loving care adding much to the quality of Mary’s life. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice.
