Winifred M. Woodrich

Born: 4/9/1916
Died: 4/9/2023
Age: 107
Community: Flushing, MI

Winifred Marie Woodrich, of Flushing, passed away at her residence on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023-- the morning of her 107th birthday. There will be a private celebration of her life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory may contribute to the Flushing Historical Society & Museum (431 W. Main St., Flushing, MI 48433) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105).

Winifred was born on April 9, 1916, to Frank A and Edna G (Youngs) Gekeler on her grandparents’ farm near Cass City, Michigan. She grew up in Flint, Michigan and was a proud graduate of Flint Northern High School’s Class of 1934. On July 26, 1941, Winifred married Robert B. Woodrich (1918-1996) and they enjoyed 55 years together, living in Flint and Flushing.

A woman known by many names—Winnie, Fred, Grandma Fred, Mrs. Fred—she was also a woman of many talents. She was an accomplish seamstress, an avid reader, an excellent crafter and a lifelong volunteer as a scout leader, a homeroom mother, a teacher’s helper, as well as serving the Flushing Historical Society for over 45 years. During the winter months, in the last twenty-some years, Winifred spent time in Polo Park (Davenport, Florida), where she had many friends. Although Winnie/Fred never met a sweet treat that she didn’t like, anything chocolate was by far her favorite! Extending her desire to help others and her wish to continue college, Winifred donated her body to Michigan State University’s Willed Body Program.

Winifred will be dearly missed by her children, Robert Woodrich, Sheryl Batey, and John (Barb) Woodrich, six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, many well-loved nieces, nephews, special friends and neighbors. She was predeceased by her husband Robert, her brothers, Paul Gekeler and Gerald Gekeler, and her son-in-law, James R Batey. A special thank you to her excellent caregivers (Tammy, Jane, Jill, and Candy), as well as to her neighbors, Rick and Connie Mark, whose kind attention and support allowed her to remain in her home until her passing.
