HEMINGWAY, Lawrence Frederick and Gloria May (Nowlin) – both of Columbiaville, MI, formerly of Flint Township, MI. Gloria, age 87, passed into Glory on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, and Lawrence, age 88, was reunited with her in the Glory of Jesus, on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held 12 PM Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 6100 Richfield Road, Flint, MI 48506; Pastor Shawn Kook officiating. The family will receive visitors 10 AM-12 PM Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Calvary Presbyterian Church. Inurnment will take place at 3:30 PM Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Hollenbeck Cemetery, Columbiaville, MI.
Gloria was born in Roscommon, MI, on October 25, 1935, daughter of the late Donald and Ella May (Durrant) Nowlin. She married Lawrence Hemingway on May 12, 1956, in Flint, MI. Gloria worked as a Comptometer operator at AC Spark Plug, scoring the highest on the aptitude test. She toured the country as a soloist with the AC Spark Plug Band and Choir and was a homemaker who loved to garden, can and sew. Gloria enjoyed her winters in North Ft. Myers, FL, and spending time during summers in West Branch at the cottage, making memories with family and friends. She was a longtime member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir and serving as a deaconess.
Larry was born in Flint, MI on December 8, 1934, son of the late Frederick and Emolyn (Rice) Hemingway. He married Gloria Nowlin on May 12, 1956, in Flint, MI and she preceded him in death on December 7, 2022. Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1953-1964. He missed his Flint Tech High School Commencement in 1953 as he was assisting during the aftermath of the Beecher tornado. Larry retired from General Motors in 1989, after 37 years of service, retiring as Manager of Customer Satisfaction at Buick Motor Division. He served as a Ruling Elder at Calvary Presbyterian Church and head of Session for many years. Larry was the head of the Building and Grounds Committee during the building of the present church building. He loved gardening, spending time Up North, driving the pontoon boat with his family and enjoying winters in Florida with family and friends.
Larry and Gloria are survived by 3 children, Lori (Joseph) Schaffer, Todd (Wendy) Hemingway and Lynn (Robin) Mosher; 8 grandchildren, Joseph (Jenna) Schaffer, Leah (Stephen) Caron, Adam (Ashlee) Hemingway, Joy (Joseph) Amaya, Abigail (David) Freiburger, Rebekah (Eric) Edwards, Graham Hemingway and Ella Rose Hemingway; 6 great-grandchildren, Eva, Charles, Remi, Charlotte “Ari”, Vladyn and Thaddeus “Teddy”; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Hemingway; and many other loving family members and dear friends.
They were preceded in death by Gloria’s parents, Donald and Ella Nowlin; Larry’s parents, Frederick and Emolyn Hemingway; son, Mark David Hemingway; grandson, Joshua David Hemingway; great-granddaughter, Alice Elaine Amaya; Gloria’s brothers, Jack Nowlin and George “Dean” Nowlin; Larry’s siblings, Marion (Shirl Richardson) Fitzpatrick, Jean Hemingway, Richard (Delores) Hemingway and Beverly (Walter) Luginbuhl.
The family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to Samantha McLain, Janet Schafer, Patricia Taylor, Vanessa Woodley, Susan Jacobs, Donna Tookes, Chantel “Cocoa” Carter, Jill Zuchowski, Kristi Reyes, and all the wonderful staff at ProMedica Hospice who have been sincere caregivers and supporters.
