Earl was born on June 10, 1926, in Saginaw, Michigan, to the late Earl and Hazel (Bacon) Swain. A 1944 graduate of Montrose High School, he was drafted into the US Army, serving in the European theater in WWII, and was involved in the Battle of Remagen during the allied invasion of Germany. Following the end of the war he was stationed in Germany, returning to the US in 1946. Mr. Swain graduated from the University of Michigan and spent the first half of his career as a CPA. He then attended the University of Michigan School of Law, graduating in 1967, and spent the remainder of his career as a tax and trust attorney for Genesee Bank in Flint. Earl was a member of the Michigan Bar Association.
In 1981, Earl married Phyllis (Watkins) Williams. Together they travelled extensively throughout North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. He enjoyed participating in family life and took a keen interest in the activities of his stepdaughters and grandchildren. He was a life-long member of the Montrose United Methodist Church, American Legion Harry Baker Post #367 of Montrose, and active in Montrose community organizations.
Possessed of a strong intellect and natural curiosity, Mr. Swain was a voracious reader and studied the German language, in which he was fluent, as well as Russian. He had a love and great knowledge of classical music, as well as botany. His favorite place to be was outdoors working in the yard and tending to his expansive daffodil gardens.
