MIERTA, Emma Louise (Laing) - of Davison, MI, age 68, passed away at her home on Saturday, May 14, 2022. She had bravely faced her cancer diagnosis and fought it for over a year and a half. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held 11 AM Thursday, May 19, 2022 at Emmanuel Church, 6434 Richfield Road, Flint, MI 48506; Pastor Jack Dowden officiating. The family will receive visitors 10-11 AM Thursday at Emmanuel Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Church, in Emma’s memory.
Emma was born on August 23, 1953 in Flint, MI to Victor and Doris (Krug) Laing. She grew up in the Flint area where she was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Emma accepted Jesus as her savior at a tent meeting. She decided at a young age that her goal in life was to be an elementary school teacher. She was a graduate of Kearsley High School Class of 1971. Pursuing her teaching goal, Emma studied at Cedarville College earning a Bachelor of Education degree in 1975. Furthering her education, Emma earned a master’s degree from Oakland University. She taught elementary children her entire career in many locations: the Philippines, Flint, Lansing, Temecula, California and finally at Lakeville Schools, retiring after 39 years of teaching. Emma married Tom Mierta on April 5, 1997. Together they enjoyed traveling, working in Awana at church, riding their recumbent trikes and entertaining families with children at their cottage. Emma loved playing her dulcimer especially with the group in Orange Beach, Alabama where she and Tom spent several winters as snowbirds.
Emma is survived by her husband, Tom Mierta; sister, Ruth (Bob) Jones; brother, Victor (Trish) Laing; 2 nephews, Kirk Laing and Cole Laing; niece, Corlene Laing; 9 Mierta nieces and nephews and their children; many other loving family members and good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Doris Laing and her sister, Sarah, who died earlier in 2022.
