Gustav “Gus” Leroy Kienitz, age 81, of Mt. Morris, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on July 24, 2025, surrounded by family and close friends.
Born on August 3, 1943, in Saginaw County, Michigan, Gus was the son of Gustav and Hattie (LaDuke) Kienitz. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War; he earned both Associate and Bachelor Degrees from MSU, Delta and U of M.
Gus began his career at Dow Corning Medical, then moved into teaching at the Flint School District, and dedicated 30 years to Buick in Flint before retiring in 2006.
Outside of work, Gus had a deep love for gardening, especially orchids. He spent years cultivating and selling orchids at shows, sharing both knowledge and joy with fellow enthusiasts. His passion led him around the world, deepening his appreciation for the beauty and diversity of plant life. Gus was featured in Orchid Digest magazine and won several awards for his Orchids.
Gus also had a lifelong love for travel, always eager to explore new places and meet new people. The memories of his kind soul will live on in all who knew him.
He will be remembered as a devoted brother and uncle, and a loyal friend. Gus is survived by his siblings, Dorothy Simmons and Gerald (Ruby) Kienitz; many nieces and nephews; as well as numerous loving friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gustav Sr. and Hattie Kienitz, and sister Arlene (John Sr.) Dembicky, and brother-in-law Edward Simmons.
A celebration of life service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025, at McGeehan Funeral Homes Martin Chapel. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and continue until the time of service.
In honor of Gus’s memory, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Luke’s New Life Center or North End Soup Kitchen in Flint, or to a charity of your choice. |
