AMBLE, Barbara J. – of Davison, MI, age 89, passed away Monday, October 9, 2023 at Ascension Genesys Hospital.
Barbara was born in Flint, MI on November 14, 1933, daughter of the late William and Helen (Delecki) Walker. She met Robert Amble in first grade, and they later became high school sweethearts and married on July 10, 1953 in Harrison, Michigan. They remained unwaveringly devoted to one another for the rest of their lives.
Barbara was a passionate educator, and fondly shared stories of her career that began in a one-room schoolhouse outside of Harrison, and ended teaching special education students at Davison Middle School. She was an avid Central Michigan University (CMU) fan, where she earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees, and could regularly be found armed with a fresh pot of coffee, cheering on Michigan State University sports of any kind.
She was an enthusiastic life-long learner, keen to discuss current events or her take on politics and world events. She had an adventurous spirit, and traveled to Poland and China by herself to learn more about each country. A voracious reader, Barbara loved to participate in informal “book clubs,” where she rotated books amongst family and friends which she covered in sticky notes that offered a high-level synopsis and opinion of the book and / or the author.
Barbara coined herself the “original recycler” after growing up in a modest household as a child. She resolutely reused or recycled everything humanly possible. Food was never wasted. Old bouquets of flowers were repurposed and pressed into homemade bookmarks, and scraps of cloth or buttons were saved to mend clothing or repurpose into a quilt.
Always the champion of the underdog, Barbara would gamely take any person or plant beneath her wing and lovingly nurture. Barbara collected pig figurines, and championed the animals’ intelligence and natural tendencies toward cleanliness.
She was incredibly thoughtful, and religiously sent her “grands” a homemade postcard on a monthly basis, sketching a holiday picture greeting, or holding an informal poll to name an animal frequenting her woods. Heartfelt holiday, anniversary and birthday cards arrived at the homes of dear friends and family with military precision. She never missed an opportunity to make those she loved feel special, and she was dearly loved in return.
Barbara is survived by her sister-in-law Kay Walker, Harrison, Michigan, her sister-in-law Katie Dobie, Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, her loving son Jon Amble, Six Lakes, Michigan, and daughter-in-law Kim Amble, Davison, Michigan. She leaves behind nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many loving family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (87), her infant son, Duane, daughter, Karen Amble Leffler (58) and son, Robert Amble Jr. (50).
Cremation has taken place and no services will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be considered to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of her son Bob, or the Susan G. Komen Foundation in memory of her daughter, Karen.
