James Russel Johnston, age 78 of Flushing, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home, surround by his loved ones on Thursday, August 18, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. Jim was born in Flint, Michigan to parents Noble and Mary Johnston.
Jim held an associates degree and retired from GM V8 engine plant after 35 years as a skilled trades machine repairman.
Jim spent almost two years in Vietnam as an Army Specialist E4 helicopter mechanic, before leaving the military following the death of his brother. Jim was honorably discharged and earned several awards including the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Sharpshooter (rifle M-14) and Meritorious Unit Citation.
Jim had a special talent working with wood and loved doing carpentry work. He loved hunting and fishing, but he truly loved being on the boat. He also loved watching his grandkids play sports.
Jim leaves behind his wife Dianna Johnston, they were married 53 years. Two children Kristy Vamos (Bryon) and Jimmy J (Michelle). Grandkids Joey, Bryce, Brock, Riley, Luke and Lily. Sister Elsie Nolan. Many nieces, nephews, and sister in laws. Special friends Randy and Cindy Garner. Kirk and Linda Walters.
Jim is preceded in death by his brother Donny, parents Noble and Mary, granddaughter Jamie and niece Angela.
At his request, Jim will have full military honors and be laid to rest at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
