Donna Marie Weir, 97 years old went to have coffee with Jesus on Friday, August 11, 2023 after a brief illness. She was surrounded by family and loved ones. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00am on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 700 Columbia Drive, Durand, MI 48429. Fr. Tom Nenneau will celebrate. Interment immediately following at Yerian Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8:00 PM on Monday, August 14 and Tuesday, August 15 with a Rosary Prayer at 7:30 PM on Tuesday provided by Deacon Wayne at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, 501 N. Saginaw Street, Durand, MI 48429.
Born on March 30, 1926 to Andrew and Elizabeth Foster, Donna graduated as an RN from Borgess School of Nursing in Kalamazoo. She married James Bruce Weir on September 6, 1947. They moved to Lennon, MI and raised 12 children during their nearly 76-year marriage. Donna worked part-time as a registered nurse in Flint for 40 years. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church for 75 years, serving in the guild, altar society and funeral dinner planning. Her love of God was evident in her loving, caring and generous spirit. She was titled ‘Lennon’s Nurse” and gave of her time selflessly.
She and Jim wintered in Florida for 30 years. Continuing with a giving spirit there, she volunteered at Meals on Wheels and the Hibiscus House mission store. They made many great friends in Florida, especially Gary and Kathy Lightfoot who became an “adopted” family. They enjoyed a lot of time with friends and family playing card games and BINGO.
Donna was very proud of the large family she and Jim raised. They felt abundantly blessed by the love that surrounded them. Surviving are 6 sons: Tom (Sue) Weir of Houghton Lake, MI, Dan (Janice) Weir of Vineland, NJ, Steve(Wanda)Weir of Zeeland, MI, Bob (Pat) Weir of Durand, MI, Ron (Diane) Weir of Avoca, MI, Joe (Robin) of Durand, MI., 4 daughters: Mary Burnell of Venice, FL, Lori Grumley of Lennon, MI, Beth (Chuck) Root of Haslett, MI, Cindy (Jeff) Heffernan of Grand Rapids, MI., 27 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. She will be reunited in heaven with her daughter Connie, son Chuck and grandson Dane.
In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to St. Mary Food Pantry or to the ARC of Shiawassee County.
