James Ross Opperman, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, in Millington, at the age of 82 in the arms of his wife and surrounded by his children. Born on November 9, 1942, in Flint, James's life was a testament to the enduring power of hard work, devotion to family, and a generous spirit that touched all who knew him.
James was the cherished husband of Greta, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage since their wedding on May 7, 1959, in Burlington, Kentucky. Together, they built a life rich in love and laughter, creating a family that would expand to include their children: James, Mark (Carrie), David (Lisa), Daniel (Heidi), Matthew (Kelley), and Kaylinjoy (Kevin), as well as a legacy of 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his in-laws: Bruce (Kay) Hemingway, Joyce (Vic) Bickel, Linda (Daryl) Rock, Ed Jewell, Marvin Jewell, close friends: Robert Fall and Theodore “Ted” Stilson.
He was a beloved brother to Bob Opperman and was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Jeannette Opperman, his sister Phyllis Moore, grandsons Caleb Babcock, Travis Opperman, Nathan Opperman, and close friends Andy Green and Kenny Figel. Each family member and close friend held a special place in his heart, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
James's work ethic was unparalleled, and his career was as diverse as it was long. He took pride in his many jobs, which included positions at Buick, Brinks, and in the fields of farming, wagon building, and construction. His hands were rarely still, for he found great satisfaction in the fruits of his labor and the contributions he made to each endeavor.
Farming and animals were among James's greatest interests. He found solace in the rhythm of the seasons and the simplicity of tending to the earth and its creatures. This connection to the land was a source of great peace and fulfillment for him throughout his life. Those who knew James would describe him as loving, kind, and faith-filled. His unwavering commitment to his beliefs and the gentle guidance he provided were the cornerstones of his character. His kindness was a gentle force that inspired others to be their best selves.
