Genevieve (Jenny) Mathews, age 95, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2021, in her Millington home, surrounded by her loving children.
She was born in Detroit on September 23, 1925, to her parents Lawrence and Margaret (Rusecki) Cuipak. She spent her life in Vassar after marrying her great love Edward E. (Tige) Mathews on June 22, 1946. After his death she worked in the healthcare field at the Frankenmuth Convalescent Center until retirement. She loved spending time with family, playing cards, crocheting, working on puzzles, camping, cooking and was active in her church. Her grandchildren say she was famous for her "slipper" and windmill cookies.
She was the loving mother of eleven children: Edward Mathews (Carol Mathews), Patricia Ward (Burt Ward). Loretta Audinet (Leland Audinet), John Mathews (Lynette Mathews), Evelyn Knight (Bob Knight), Michael Mathews, Tim Mathews, Henrietta Young, Gail Mathews (Byron Hatch), Claudia Briggs (Tom Briggs), and Lawrence Mathews.
She had many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even great great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and two sisters and children: Edward, John, Evelyn, Michael, Claudia, Lawrence and granddaughter, Nicole Briggs.
The family will be present to receive friends at Martin Funeral Home in Vassar from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Monday, June 14, 2021. At 6:00pm, Monday evening, family, friends and parish will gather to pray the Rosary at 6:00pm.
On Tuesday morning, Mrs. Mathews will be taken to church to lie in state from 10:00am until the time of Funeral Mass at 11:00am. Rev. Fr. Christian Tabares will officiate with burial to follow in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Charitable donations can be sent to the "Make-a-Wish Foundation" and the "American Cancer Society" per Genevieve's request. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church. |
