Tony J. Hornak - began his eternal walk with the Lord on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. His spirit and smile live on through his two sons, three grandchildren, girlfriend, extended family, and those with the esteemed honor of calling him a friend.
Dedicated to service his entire life, Tony exemplified compassion and selflessness. After graduating from
Birch Run High School, he served in the 191st Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam where he experienced his first step in the journey of public service. After serving in the U.S. Army, Tony returned home to Taymouth Township, focusing on continuing to make strides in the community he grew up in. He served 20 years as a fire and rescue volunteer, 16 years with the Taymouth Township Board, and three years with the Birch Run Police Department. Tony could also be found every Saturday night at Ss. Francis and Clare Parish serving as an usher for Mass.
After retiring from GM, Tony appreciated the simple things in life - a walk in the woods, a quiet fishing spot on the river, morning coffee with his peers, and cards in the evenings with friends. A silent evening in the family woods hunting deer was his idea of a perfect night. He always made time for family and passing on valuable life lessons to his grandchildren - so don’t worry, Papa - we will water your apple trees! Not one sit still in retirement, Tony also enjoyed a second career at O’Guinn Family Funeral Homes where he enjoyed supporting families during their time of need and became a very loved and dedicated member of the staff. Tony was always up for an adventure or two, whether driving up north to visit family for the day or going on cross-country adventures with his girlfriend, Jackie. No matter what though, he always ended up back home.
Tony is survived by: 2 sons: Nick and John; 3 grandchildren: Chloe, Aidan, and Miles; Girlfriend, Jacqueline Tanner, whom he loved until his last breath. Tony is reunited with his brother, Jim Hornak: Sister, Barb Kukulis, and his parents, Steve and Kate Hornak.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated, in memory of Tony at 11AM on Monday, July 31, 2023, at Ss. Francis and Clare Catholic Parish – 12157 Church St., in Birch Run. Rev. Fr. Thomas McNamara officiating. Burial to follow in Cook Cemetery with full military honors. Family and friends are welcome to say goodbye to the kindest man they ever knew on Sunday from 12PM until 8PM at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Birch Run and at the church on Monday from 10AM until the time of Mass.
