Lillian was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 5, 1923, to Rustam Joseph and Mariam Yonan Joseph. For her first 17 years, she lived at 1617 N. Wells Street, within walking distance of her beloved Moody Memorial Church, where she first heard the gospel and accepted Jesus as her Savior. She began her 50-plus years of Sunday school teaching at Carter Assyrian Memorial Church, where she enjoyed teaching an all-boys class.
After graduating from Waller High School in 1942, Lillian worked for four companies in a variety of roles with increasing responsibility. Soon after the war ended, she was introduced to David Baba, a WWII veteran from Flint, Michigan. After they were married in Chicago, on September 11, 1948, they made their home in Flint, where they welcomed five children; Mariette, Rochelle, Crystal, Jonathan and Annette. Lillian took advantage of many of the Mott Foundation classes and became more than a capable homemaker, seamstress, baker and chef. She was the heart of the family and the glue that held everyone together.
Lillian became a member of Riverside Tabernacle in 1948, and she continued her passion for teaching in Riverside’s Sunday School in 1960 until 2010. She strove to make every lesson memorable, exciting and fun! But most of all, she cherished each of her students, and her greatest desire was to lead them to believe in Jesus as their personal Savior.
Lillian also enjoyed working in the Grand Blanc School District as a librarian. During her 17-year career she put her whole heart into the library at Reid Elementary School and the many students she cared about and served. They cared for her dearly as well, often greeting her in stores and restaurants years after her retirement.
One day Lillian invited her neighbor ladies to attend Woman’s Aglow, a global Christian organization, and out of that grew a Bible study in her home for many years, through which she led several to faith in Jesus.
Lillian also joined Women’s Bible Fellowship and for over a decade, she loved taking part in the corporate worship, in-depth Bible study, as well as meeting and making new friends.
Lillian had a unique quality to make people feel seen, loved and important. It was for that reason so many wanted to be close to her and treasured her friendship.
