Gayle Josephine Brady (Rushlow)

Born: 4/16/1943
Died: 12/13/2022
Age: 79
Community: Flint, MI

Gayle Josephine (Rushlow) Brady changed her address to Heaven on December 13, 2022, at the age of 79. She was born April 16, 1943 in Flint, MI, the youngest of four to loving parents, Floyd and Ruth Rushlow. She is survived by her doting husband of 58 years, Jim Brady, sister, Ila Pound of Sonora, CA, and two sons Christopher (Terri) of Cary, NC and Patrick Brady of Flint, MI, along with seven adored grandchildren (Casey, MacKenzie, Peyton, Nate, Gabriel, Christine, James “J.R.”), two great-grandchildren (Marshall and Haven), and many loved nieces and nephews.

Gayle took her parents by surprise in their later years, but she was no surprise to the Lord who planned her every day. She attended Flint Central High School, then attended Hurley School of nursing to become a Registered Nurse. Her nursing work included time at Hurley Hospital, FOH Hospital and finally McLaren Hospital where she retired having worked as a floor nurse, a stellar IV team member and a nurse in the outpatient pulmonary clinic. “There’s no vein I cannot find!” she used to tell her grandchildren. She seemed to enjoy the family grimaces while she detailed her nursing stories at the dinner table.

Her caring for people went well beyond her occupation. Gayle, “Mom,” “Grammy” and “Great Nana with the glasses,” will be remembered for her love for all things FAMILY. She would lure them in with moist molasses cookies, her all-day pot-o-beans and of course chili for the crowd – even out of the station-wagon tailgate at her sons’ motocross races. Her life was so others-focused that even solitaire became a game for many when grandchildren were involved.

She loved to laugh and was always up for an adventure saying, “I’m in!” long before knowing any details. The Jeep rides into the heights of Silver Lake Sand Dunes were replaced with golfcart rides through the forest, but both represented fresh air and nature view. She loved the ocean’s never-ending horizon and was always content with a good book in hand. She loved the Lord and continually prayed for her husband, children and grandchildren fervently. Her attitude- even in illness- was stellar and exemplified the Bible’s message of 1 Thess 5:18: “giving thanks in every circumstance.” Music gave her special moments in her life – attending many concerts, festivals and teaching herself piano and banjo.

A recent situation on what would be her last wedding anniversary exemplified her heart well. While at dinner to celebrate 58 years, most women would want to be doted on, for it to be all about themselves and expect excellent service. However, Gayle didn’t possess that attitude. She noticed stress on the waitress and dug in to see if she could be of help. As it turned out, the waitress’s daughter had an unwanted pregnancy of twins. Gayle cared enough to connect this “stranger” waitress with a young couple who were in the throes of waiting to find a baby to adopt. Arrangements were made and the private adoption went through – giving LIFE to the two newborns in the last weeks of Gayle’s, wherein she shared her home with the new family even while her own health was failing.

She had a life well-lived and was well loved. She will be missed dearly.

A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00pm on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, Eric Stewart officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00pm Saturday until the time of her service.
