Thomas was born in Flint, Michigan on February 7, 1932, son of the late John and Mary (Vermette) Mullally. He married Carol Hinterman on February 13, 1960 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Flint, MI. During their 62 years of marriage, they formed a legacy of family and a devout catholic faith. They viewed each of their 10 children as a “gift from God”, raised all 10 in a parochial school, then guided each one to a college education.
Thomas started off from humble roots in Mount Morris on the family farm. He balanced a life of farm work and schooling. Hours of cutting wood, animal care, plowing fields and caring for his younger siblings allowed him to develop grit and determination that he carried throughout his life. Later in life he bought his own farm and passed this passion onto his children. He put his life skills and intelligence to use in the field of education. He taught in both parochial and public schools for 38 years. His passion was in special education helping the learning disabled with specific curriculums tailored to one’s social, psychological, and intellectual needs.
Thomas had a devotion for his family. He spent years researching and documenting the genealogy of his family as it dated back to his Irish surname thousands of years ago. As he laid down his own family tree, each child knew their legacy for generations. Thomas preferred a simple life but ensured his family was “warm, had food and each other.”
Thomas valued education and lifelong learning. His education included: 1950 High School St. Mary’s in Mount Morris; 1950-1953 Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit; 1960 Bachelors of Arts in Education from the University of Michigan; 1964 Masters of Arts in Education from Eastern Michigan University. He was an avid reader as one could tell from his large home library. He was a source of endless knowledge to those who knew and asked him.
Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Carol; 9 children, Dr. Thomas (Dr. Loretta), Mary Mullally, Christine Mullally, Dr. John (Beth), Mark (Victoria), Elizabeth (Mike) Gildner, Lisa Willard, Michelle Mullally and Dr. Timothy (Dr. Lisa); 33 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; siblings, Sister Ellen Mullally, Alice Manning, Joseph Mullally and Michael Mullally; many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by son, Dr. Brian Mullally; siblings, John Joseph Mullally, Kathleen Mullally, Mary Margaret Poletti, Sister Agnes Mullally and James Mullally.
