January 29, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Affectionately known as “Mumma” to many, and grandma “Bumbye” to her grandchildren, she was an organist, music teacher, nurse, the family “counselor” and artist but most of all she was a was devoted child of God.
Wanda was born to Mary and Michael Potoczny on April 11, 1925, in Flint, Michigan and was the older sister to John Michael Potoczny and Ann (Brandt) Adams. In 1946, she married the love of her life, John William Yancho, at Sacred Heart Church in Flint. Together they raised 6 children: Dr. Mark Yancho, Dr. John M. “Sparky” Yancho (Paula) Freeland, MI, Jerome Yancho Montrose, MI, Faith Yassick (Greg) Flushing, MI, Laurie Morgan (Jeff) Flushing, MI, and David Yancho, Howell, MI. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
At age 16 she was appointed organist and choir director at Sacred Heart Church, a position she held for 22 years. At age 40, she went back to school, became a Registered Nurse, and worked in the newborn nursery at McLaren Hospital for 9 ½ years. In 1976, she was offered the job of music teacher, organist and choir director at St. Robert Bellarmine Church and School in Flushing. She continued at St. Robert through the years as organist until her retirement at age 93! Wanda was an accomplished organist and played for hundreds of funerals, weddings, many recitals, and accompanied large choral works with chamber orchestra.
At the young age of 80, Wanda took up acrylic painting, a hobby she absolutely loved. Her passion for painting resulted in many family and friends proudly displaying her work in their homes and offices and her paintings numbered into the hundreds. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting and made many outfits and doll clothes for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Wanda’s life was centered around her faith, family, music, and the arts. She was the Flushing Knights of Columbus Citizen of the Year in 1994, awarded the Diocese of Lansing “Alleluia” award in 2015, for her service to music ministry and in 2017, the St. Robert School Music room in Flushing, Michigan, where she worked for 43 years, was named the “Wanda A. Yancho Music Hall.”
Her infectious positive attitude, warmth, deep faith in Jesus and a devotion to the Blessed Mother served as a role model to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
