Gary was born in Ottumwa, Iowa on July 20, 1942, the son of Joseph L. and Glee E. (Nolan) Thompson. He married Marilyn E. Hoskins on June 28, 1964, in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Gary graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Biology from William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa where he met and married his wife. After graduating he moved to Pontiac, Michigan where he was employed by General Motors. In 1971 he transferred to GM Parts in Swartz Creek, Michigan and retired with 33+ years of service. Gary liked to collect ANYTHING. This started at an early age by collecting, buying and selling coins and paper-money. This led to opening and operating his own successful business, Collector's Corner, in Flushing, Michigan for 9 years. Church participation and bible study was important to Gary. He completed 7 years of study with Bible Study Fellowship (BSF). Music was also an integral part of his entire life; from playing coronet, piano, organ and singing. Many people knew Gary for his green thumb. He loved to garden which allowed him to share fruits and vegetables with others. Gary had a keen sense of humor and was very adept at telling jokes and stories. Over the past 14 years he wintered in Frostproof, Florida where he enjoyed warm weather and sunshine.
Gary is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marilyn; children, Gena and husband Terry Hopkins of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Chad and wife Lori Thompson of Farmington, Minnesota; grandchildren, Alissa Hopkins Penney, Graham and Emerald Hopkins, Joseph Thompson, Nicklas Thompson; great-grandchildren, Lillyan Wegmann, Paisley Hopkins, Magnolia Hopkins; brother, Lawrence and Janet Thompson; mother-in-law, Helen Hoskins; brother-in-law, Joseph Hoskins; and several nieces and nephews.
