Brandt-Smith, Rita Eva of Flushing, age 83, died Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at her home. Cremation has taken place and private burial of cremated remains will be in Charlevoix Cemetery at a later date.
Rita was born in Bodenhausen, East Prussia on July 10, 1940, the daughter of Franz and Anna Kuster. Rita had one brother and a sister. Her family was displaced during the war and afterward, settled in Friedberg, Germany. Rita moved the United States in 1962, and during the next 25 years, raised her four stepchildren, Brenda, Lana, Muggi, and Tim. Rita was widowed in 1988, and moved to Michigan in 1996, settling in Flushing. In 1999, Rita met her current husband, David Smith, at a singles’ dance in Saginaw and soon meet David's kids Matt and Scott. Dave and Rita celebrated 21 years of marriage.
Rita was an animal lover. Cats and dogs were all her friends and she raised many throughout the years. Many of her favorite memories involved dogs or cats and Binder Park Zoo was a favorite place to visit. Rita was a great cook, as her many party attendees will support. German goulash was one of her specialties and she taught Scott German cooking secrets. She enjoyed going to Frankenmuth to get “real” German food, dance to the polka music outside and shop at Kern’s sausage store.
Rita was a great swimmer and spent many summer days at Seven Lakes State Park swimming around the island. She loved to dance and enjoyed gardening. A favorite memory was a cruise to the Bahamas with her best friends Rita and Emily came up often in conversations. Rita enjoyed spending a couple of winters in Florida before her health slowed her down. She had two strokes and her health never recovered, but she will always be remembered as my hero.
Rita is survived by her husband, David Smith and one niece, Anette, who lives in Germany. |
