VAN HOUTEN, Joseph F. – Of Fenton, age 79, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at his residence surrounded by his family.

Joseph (Joe) was born in Flint, Michigan on January 30, 1947, the son of the late Frank and Kathryn (Haley) Van Houten. Joe grew up in the Flint area and graduated from St. Agnes High School class of 1965. He went on to received his Bachelor’s Degree from Michigan State University in 1970. On August 14, 1973, he married Dalene Schneiderhan and they recently celebrated 52 years together. He found his greatest joy in his family, Dalene, Aimee, Stephen and Melanie. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing along with being an animal lover. Joe formerly owned Blue Spruce Landscaping and went on to work and retired from EDM Wiretek. He was a long-time member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Dalene;

Children, Aimee (Paul) Wolven, Stephen (Heather) Van Houten, and Melanie (Robby) Hoekstra;

Grandchildren, Haley Wolven, Lauren Wolven, Nora Hoekstra, Maximus Van Houten, James Hoekstra and Flynn Van Houten;

Twin, Daniel (Jeanne) Van Houten;

Brothers-in-laws, David (Carol) Schneiderhan and Paul (Agnes) Schaeffer;

Sister-in-law, Evelyn Van Houten;

Many nieces and nephews, especially Lynn (Adrien) Drouault, John Paul (fiancé Jill) Schneiderhan, Tim (Stephanie) Schaeffer, and Russ Schaeffer;

And long time friend and co-owner of the property known as “deer camp”, Dennis (Norma) Bowles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Kathryn Van Houten, sister, Sandra Schaeffer and brother, Robert Van Houten.

Dalene would like to express her appreciation to Joe’s caregivers, Angy, Sarah, Eric, and Reece, along with his Compassus nurse, Ashley for their devotion and loving care of Joe and emotional support for her.

Visitation will be held from 5-8pm Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint and 9am Thursday, April 30, 2026 at Holy Family until the time of the Mass.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am Thursday, April 30, 2026 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 11804 S. Saginaw, Grand Blanc, Father Leronio Vodivodi officiating.

Cremation will take place following the Mass.

Burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Knights of Columbus #6742 (memo: No Neighbor Left Behind Program), and Holy Family School Annual Appeal (Tuition Assistance).
