HILLIER, Shawn - On Saturday, December 23, 2023, Shawn Alan Hillier passed away peacefully at Fenton Healthcare in Fenton, MI. He was 74 years old.
Shawn was born to late Wayne Owen Hillier and late Myrna Delores (Larose) Hillier on September 2, 1949, in Flint, MI, where he remained for most of his life. On September 13, 1967, Shawn joined the Army and fought in the Vietnam War as a radio operator. During his time with the Army, he received several medals, including the Purple Heart for good conduct, Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.
He married the love of his life and best friend, Debra (Russell) Hillier on November 15, 1996. Their love for one another is hard to find and their banter back and forth was a joy to hear. Shawn enjoyed life, loved to make everyone smile, was the master of the “wet willy”, and remained positive throughout all his struggles with his health and the passing of his beloved wife, Debra, in November 2020. Shawn loved spending time with his family and pet parrots, Houdini and Jackson. He loved coffee, Werther’s Soft Caramels, Dark Chocolate, vanilla ice cream, “good” pizza, White Castle burgers, and the occasional shot of Black Velvet. He loved watching old westerns, especially Gunsmoke and Bonanza.
Shawn will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. His positivity in life was an inspiration for anyone facing adversity. He always worried about everyone but himself and wanted nothing but everyone around him to be happy.
Shawn is survived by his brothers Kenneth (Theresa) Hillier and Robert (Tina) Hillier; his Step-Mother, Sue Hillier; his mother in law, Helen Arvilla Lackey (Charles William); his children: Shawn Hillier, Jason Russell (Jessica), Rachel Pence (Clarence), Joshua Russell (Kristen), Rebecca Lopez, and Sarah Balogh (Shawn); grandchildren: Hannah, Mason, Elijah, Aidan, Madison, Anthony, Andrew, Angelie, Travis, Randi, Isaac, Ada, Allison and Carah; great-grandson Tazzen; his sister in law Cheryle Lynn Andes (Robert); sister in law Marla “Sue” (Charles Richard); several nieces and nephews; and his beloved parrots Houdini and Jackson.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Debra (Russell) Hillier; his father, Wayne Owen Hillier; mother, Myrna Delores Hillier; his sister, Vicki Raver; his brother, Norman Hillier; his brother, Jeff Brown; his daughter, Michelle Hillier; his brother-in-law, Charles Richard “Rick” Lackey (Marla); his nephew Marcelle; his nephew Nicholas Alexander “Nick” Andes; his great-granddaughter Havona Marie Hawsawi; and beloved pet, Gris-Gris.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12:30pm on Friday, January 12, 2024 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Visitation from 11:30am on Friday until the time of service. An inurnment will follow at 2:00pm at Great Lakes National Cemetery with Military Honors under the auspices of the United States Army.
