DOROTHY S. WHITE
Dorothy S. (Buchanan) White was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on January 19, 2024.
Dorothy was born in Detroit, Michigan 90 Years ago, to her Father and Mother, Esther A. (Broecker) & Milton E. Rowley.
Her younger years were spent in the Detroit area surrounded by several cousins she considered her brothers and sisters since she was an only child. As she entered her teen years her parents moved to a home out in the country near Hadley. To say the least, that didn’t last long. She was a City girl and she made it clear to her parents that this just wasn’t going to work for her. They packed up and moved to Grand Blanc. She attended Grand Blanc High School. At that time GBHS was what is now the Perry Center. While attending High School she made friends with Sylvia (Green) Wilson and Jane (Benson) Spencer. They have remained very close friends for well over 70+ years often getting together for lunch along with other classmates every couple month’s at Little Joe’s. Dorothy was very active in planning of the GBHS Class of 1950 Class Reunions.
In 1952 she met and married Bill White. They had a true Christian based marriage and were often hand in hand until Bill’s passing in February of 2021.
Bill and Dorothy were founding members of Faith Lutheran Church in Grand Blanc. Dorothy was the last living Charter Member of Faith Lutheran Church She was very involved with the Women’s Guild and other activities at the church early on.
Bill and Dorothy had two children, Melinda (Lindy) (Robert) Nicol and Mike (Lisa) White, both of Grand Blanc. They have four grandchildren, Jonathon (Tiffany) Conquest and Sarah (Kylie) Conquest and three great grandchildren, Sean, Anna and Jackson.
Dorothy’s first job was working as a Dental Assistant for a local dentist. She worked there until Bill was drafted into the Army. She followed him to Germany where she lived for a year before returning home. After they had their children she was a stay-at-home Mom until her kids were in High School. At that time she and Bill worked together at their construction company, B.G. White Construction Company. Upon her retirement she began watching her grandchildren while Lindy took over for her at the construction company. She really enjoyed spending time with Jon & Sarah and they loved hanging with their “Nana”.
In the early 1980’s Bill and Dorothy purchased a home in Charlevoix, Michigan. They would go to Charlevoix as often as possible. They cherished their memories of the time spent with family and friends up there. Dorothy and Bill loved watching the beautiful sunsets over Lake Michigan.
Dorothy enjoyed playing Bridge and was very active in local Bridge leagues. She also really enjoyed occasional trips to the casino. She suffered from arthritis and used a cane to get around as she got older; however, when she hit that casino floor she was a woman on a mission and moved like lightning. It was a true miracle I tell you!
Mom will be met in heaven by her husband, Bill and her parents who preceded her in death as well as several Aunts, Uncles and cousins.
A special THANK YOU goes to her caretakers, Corina, Raedean, Tawana, Keshia, Michelle, Brianna, Danisha and Susan from Right-at-Home for the special attention and care you gave to our Mom/Nana. Our thanks also to Gentiva Hospice for everything you have provided us.
Donations in Dorothy’s name can be made to Faith Lutheran Church, Genesee County Humane Society or the charity of one’s choice.
A Memorial Service in honor of Dorothy will be held on Monday, January 29, 2024 at Faith Lutheran Church, 12534 Holly Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the Memorial Service 11:00 a.m., Pastor Bob Scott officiating.
Inurnment will be held at a later date at Great Lakes National Cemetery. |
