Carol Joy (Brown) McClung

Born: 12/17/1939
Died: 10/15/2023
Age: 83
Community: Owosso, MI

Carol Joy (Brown) McClung passed away on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Hospice House in Owosso, at the age of 83.
She was born on December 17, 1939, in Columbus, Ohio, to Joseph C. and Kathryn (Colliflower) Brown. The daughter of a pastor, she spent her early years in Columbus, Owosso, Elkin and Troy, North Carolina, Roanoke, Virginia, and Frankfort, Indiana. She graduated from Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University) in 1961 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education.
She married Rev. Ronald C. (Ron) McClung on July 27, 1963, in Frankfort, Indiana. They celebrated their sixtieth anniversary this year. After teaching kindergarten and first grade in Frankfort, she used her skills in children’s ministry and later women’s ministry when Ron served as pastor of Wesleyan churches in Fort Wayne and Evansville, Indiana; Dover, Delaware; Owosso; and Manhattan, Kansas. She worked for a few years at the Emery-Pratt Company in Owosso and was also an at-risk aide in the Manhattan Public Schools.
They continued to work together in ministry when he became superintendent of the Iowa-Minnesota District of The Wesleyan Church. She specifically ministered to pastors’ wives. Later, when he served as assistant general secretary at The Wesleyan Church World Headquarters in Fishers, Indiana, she volunteered in the national office of Wesleyan Women and in the denominational archives. At the time of her death, she was a member of GracePointe Wesleyan Church.
As a teenager she set a goal to visit all 48 states. When Alaska and Hawaii were added, they became part of her goal too. She and Ron completed that goal in 2015 when they visited New Mexico as their 50th state. Together she and Ron made several mission trips to Pakistan and India. They also visited England, the Netherlands, and Israel.
People who knew Carol knew she was always good for one more question. She knew how to ask the right question to get people to open up, talk about themselves, and feel at ease. She was an excellent listener.
She is survived by her husband, Ron; two sons, David J. (Hillary) McClung of Franklin, Tennessee, and Michael A. (Jessica) McClung of Owosso; four grandsons, Christopher (Rachel) McClung of Monument, Colorado; Timothy McClung of Golden, Colorado; Jonathan (Bri) McClung of Nashville, Tennessee; and Geoffrey (Sydney) McClung of Taylor, Michigan; five granddaughters, Ryleigh McClung of St. Johns; Kathryn (Trent) Johnson of Spring Hill, Tennessee; Sage McClung of Franklin; Gracelynne McClung and Abigail Dryer of Owosso; five great-grandchildren, Lola, Ramona, Oliver,1687 N. M-52Claire, and William McClung of Monument; one sister, Jo Anne (Paul) Blann of Jackson. Her parents preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held at 3pm, Saturday, October 21, at GracePointe Wesleyan Church with Dr. Jo Anne Lyon officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside West Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Nelson-House Funeral Home from 4pm to 8pm on Friday, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
