Frederick Lamour Darling, of Flushing, passed away at home on August 6, 2022, at the age of 79. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2022, at Rossell Funeral Home. Pastor Sarah LaRose-Nettell will officiate. Burial will follow at Albee Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans.
The middle child and oldest son, Fred was born on November 17, 1942, to George and Leda (Nemecek) Darling. He grew up on his family’s farm in Flushing Township where he learned about growing crops and raising animals. Life on the farm ingrained a strong work ethic that he served him well throughout his life.
He graduated from Flushing High School in 1960, and joined the Air Force soon after, He attended basic training at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, TX, before being stationed at Ramstein Air Force base in Germany.
Fred had an entrepreneurial spirit since childhood. He sold seeds for gardening when he was just a little boy and was always looking for ways to make money. It was no surprise when, after the service, he began working for himself as a painter before moving into construction. He started Darling Homes & Realty in 1984 and built well over 300 custom homes in the Flushing area. Fred returned to farming in 1998, when he bought his family’s farm. For over 20 years, he worked both as a builder, and a farmer. Never one to sit still, when he retired from farming in 2021, he began building houses again.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, George and Leda, sister Marion Maloney, his son Frederick James Darling and grandson Jamie Jacobi. He is survived by his wife and partner of 32 years, April, his children Michelle, Jackie, Janni, Bobby and Toni, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. |
