Lyman, Mary A. Of Flushing, age 85, died Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at her home. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 12, 2021, at St. Robert Catholic Church. Cremation will follow the funeral Mass. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2021, at Rossell Funeral Home and 10 a.m. Monday at the church until the time of the Mass. A Rosary will be prayed 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Flushing Christian Outreach Center or the American Diabetes Association.
Mary was born in Bay City, Michigan on September 15, 1935, the daughter of Harland and Caroline (Jansen) Baird. She married Thomas Lyman on June 14, 1958. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many people. She was a highly skilled seamstress specializing in smocking and heirloom sewing. She made baby gowns, christening dresses, baby bonnets, Christmas ornaments as well as any alteration or sewing repair imaginable. She traveled widely to learn and teach her skill from youth stitch camps to seminars in Australia. Mary was a longtime member and several times President of the Mitten State Smockers as well as a member of the National Smocking Arts Guild of America.
She was honored by the City of Flint, Michigan in the early 1970’s with a key to the city for her work in the Michigan Diabetes Association and Childhood Diabetes. Mary was employed at Hurley Medical Center as an Administrative Assistant. Everyone who was associated with Mary will miss her and cherish her memory, her wit, her skills and presence among us.
Mary is survived by her husband of 63 years, Tom; five children, Kathleen “Katy” and husband Gary Smith, Greg Lyman and wife Mary Hausbeck, Mark and wife Beth Lyman, Maureen and husband Chuck Cline, Christine and husband Brett Albert; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Carole and husband Bill Nelms; and brother, Bill Marshall. She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father, Robert Marshall.
