Edward James Rozsypal - of Clio, age 99, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at his residence - Tranquility Estates in Grand Blanc, Michigan, after an accidental fall, the complications of which he did not survive. Private family committal services will be held on Monday, January 10, 2022, at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Flint.
Ed was born at home in Flint, Michigan on March 10, 1922, to parents, Vaclav and Elizabeth Rozsypal, who were assisted by a mid-wife. The Rozsypals were one of the founding families of the Flint Chapter of the Z.C.B.J. Lodge, an ethnic Czechoslovakian organization, of which Ed and his father were both long time presidents. Ed started working for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company in Flint when he was 18 and retired from there at the age of 57 (1979). He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941, was placed in the officer’s training program and completed flight training at NAS Pensacola, FL. He received his wings on the same day he wed his wife of 72 years, Mary (Fitnich) of Owosso, Michigan. Ed flew amphibius aircraft during the war, carrying military personnel throughout the South Pacific. He was retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of captain in 1968.
Ed was a member of numerous service organizations many of which he was either president or chairman of the board, including school board (Westwood Heights), Lions Club, Western Fraternal Life Assoc., Shriners (Clio) and Clio Country Club, where he was a charter member and built a home by the 13th tee that he lived in until 2017.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 2015. Ed and Mary are survived by their three children: James D. (Mlada) Rozsypal of St. Charles, IL, Janice K. (Alan) Schlytter of Grand Blanc, MI, and John P. (Mary-Shea) Rozsypal of Ann Arbor, as well as four grandchildren: Melissa (Patrick) Womak of Burr Ridge, IL, Jennifer Rozsypal of Chicago, IL, Elizabeth (Ross) McCullough of Elmhurst, IL and James Edward Rozsypal of Ann Arbor, and two great-grandchildren, Drew and Rhett McCullough of Elmhurst, IL.
