Irena was born as Irena Drutowa in Warsaw Poland, the daughter of Kazimierz & Celina Drut.
She had one brother, Stanislaw Drut who passed away in Aushwitz in December 1942.
Irena was a member of the Polish Underground Army and took part in the Warsaw uprising.
What she experienced during the Nazi regime we will never truly know, but we are indebted to her sacrifices. She was a true patriot of Poland and for freedom. Irena spent time in several POW camps between October 1944 and April 1945, mostly in Oberlangen a POW camp for women.
She married Henryk T. Bogdanowicz in Germany in October of 1946, and moved to London England from 1947 to 1953, at which time they immigrated to America, settling in Flint Michigan. Irena spent the next 20 years raising four children. After her divorce she began teaching Polish classes through the Mott Adult Foundation. She got her foot into the medical field first as a Receptionist for a doctor’s office then worked for McLaren Hospital as a Laboratory Aide from 1975 to 1996.
After retirement, she volunteered at Flushing Central Elementary School from 2002 to 2016, working with Stacey Adams and her 2nd grade class. Irena really enjoyed the interaction with the children
Irena was a member of the Flushing senior center where she wrote and published her life experiences. She enjoyed traveling, reading and socializing with friends and family.
She is survived by, daughter, Marta Irena Bogdanowicz (Robert Rautiola); granddaughter, Celina Rautiola; grandsons, Michael and Davin Rautiola; and great-grandchildren, Evangeline, Aria Irena, Violet, Leo and Ty; daughter, Ania Avery (Stan Avery); grand-dog, Bosco; son, Henryk Z Bogdanowicz (Linda Bogdanowicz); granddaughter, Aubrey; grandsons, Aaron and Adam Bogdanowicz (Mary Bogdanowicz); great-grandchildren, Carly and Cody.
