Miller, Richard Kim of Flushing, age 86, died Monday, March 4, 2024 at his home.
Dick was born in Beaverton, Michigan on February 28, 1938, the son of Dallas and Gladys (Roelofson) Miller. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Sharon; four children who adored him: Shari and husband Scott Bennett of Grand Blanc; Marci and husband Brian Glynn of Commerce Township; Jeffrey and wife Laurie Miller of Grand Blanc; and Michelle LaMay of Grand Blanc. He will also be deeply missed by his seven grandchildren who thought he was the Best Papa Ever: Ashley and husband Michael Theodore; Trevor Bennett and fiancée Juliana Gearig; Jason Glynn; Bradley Miller and fiancée Kendall Carlson; Nicole Glynn; Ryan Miller and Garrett Schiller. Dick also leaves behind his brother, Keith Miller, of Dallas, Texas; sister, Nelda Kitchen, of Minnesota and many special friends, including "The Gang." His beloved cat, Bill, is already wandering the house wondering where his Papa is.
Dick married the love of his life, Sharon Climie, on April 30, 1960. He worked for Buick Engineering in Flint for 35 years as a Drafting and Design Supervisor. He loved his career and was very proud of the fact that in that pre-computer era, he depended on critical thinking and enjoyed working with his hands. Both he and Sharon were parishioners at St. Robert Catholic Church for almost 60 years. They shared a deep abiding love. Dick faithfully stood by his wife's side through years of medical crises, never wavering in his commitment to her. He had a sweet tooth and looked forward to the delicious desserts Sharon made on a regular basis. In the mornings of his later years, Dick would sit at the kitchen counter and work the puzzles in the Detroit Free Press, but after dinner was reserved for playing Wordle on Sharon's phone. On warm Summer evenings you would find the two of them sitting side-by-side on the glider on their deck, merely content to be in each other's company.
Dick loved being outside. Camping—especially at Ludington State Park—was his favorite activity of all time and the thing he missed the most as he got older. He was an avid sports fan, especially anything U of M (particularly football) and Red Wings hockey. Dick never met a stranger. He became instant friends with the person ahead of him in line, someone walking in the parking lot, or even the entire waiting room at the doctor's office. He loved working in the yard, but made large projects (such as taking down a shed or removing a tree) a "family" event. Family was everything to Dick. When his children were young, he would join everyone at the Flint Swim & Racquet Club after work for swimming, tennis or even a picnic. He rarely missed a single game or event for any of his four kids, whether it be a tennis match, or a softball or baseball game. When the grandchildren came along, both he and Sharon did their best to attend as many sports events and activities as possible. Papa was famous for his chocolate malts and that was something all of the grandchildren looked forward to when they visited.
