Sandy was born in Eloise, Michigan and grew up in Westland, where she graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in 1983. Sandy attended Mott Community College and Baker University, where she was working toward a degree in accounting. However, she found her true calling in an elementary school.
Sandy worked for the Swartz Creek Community Schools as a school secretary at Gaines Elementary School for 16 years. She began as a library volunteer while her own children were attending Gaines and worked her way through various educational aide positions before being hired as the school secretary. During her time at Gaines Elementary School she touched the lives of hundreds of children, their families and staff members. She was well-loved and appreciated by those fortunate to know her. Sandy was a “School Mom” to a great many children over the years and she is remembered fondly for the loving care she gave to each child and in turn a sense of security to families who knew that their child was being watched over by a very caring individual. It was a morning ritual for many students to stop by the office and get a hug before heading off to class. For those students it was an essential part of the start to any school day. Even though her love and empathy were always on display, students knew that Mrs. Gibbons wasn’t going to let them get away with bad behavior. She was firm with them (she always said she loved the “naughty ones” the most) and she was teaching appropriate behavior and responsibility through her words and actions every day.
Over the years, Sandy led many charity efforts at the school: Michigan Heart Association; Hurley Pediatric Burn Ward; Christmas Gifts for Needy Families (in conjunction with the Gaines United Methodist Church); an annual “Penny War” that raised thousands of dollars over the years that were donated to charities selected by the Student Council (of which she was the sponsor); Old Newsboys; the Food Drive for Gaines Community Council; Shop-With-A-Cop; and many many more. Sandy was respected by her peers across the district because of her willingness to help anyone with anything. As the years passed she became a mentor to many and a friend to more.
Sandy was preceded in death by her grandmother, Lillian LaForge; her mother, Sharon LaForge Chilson; her step-father, Howard Chilson.
Sandy leaves her loving and adoring husband, Michael Gibbons;
three children, Courtney Gaskins (Matt Brown), Brianne Gaskins and Johnny Gaskins, as well as her very special niece, Cassie Gaskins;
step-daughters, Mischa (James) (Gibbons) Boardman and Laura Ann Gibbons;
granddaughters, Ava Gaskins Day, Addison Gordon, Lily and Pippa Boardman, Ella Brown and Davina DeMott;
she also leaves behind aunts, Carol (Dick) Queener, Kathy (Jerry) Hansen; uncle, Ron (Edie) LaForge;
cousins, Ray (Cheri) Queener, Lori Lien, Lee Rivard and Sarah Maurer, Dave Rivard, Andy LaForge, Jan (Bob) Haas and Kay Balko.
