Misekow, Shirley Ruth, of Flushing, Michigan, age 93, died peacefully in her sleep, on Wednesday, January 1st, 2025, at her home surrounded by family.
Shirley was born November 10th, 1931, in Barbourville, Kentucky where she played in the ‘holler’ with her younger sister, Barbara. Eventually her father moved the family to Flint, Michigan, where they lived in a tiny house, and her baby sister Janice was born. Over the next several years, their father built a home from the basement up. Shirley’s artistic talent made her parents proud and they asked her to choose the color of the walls and drapes. The rose patterned wallpaper she selected adorned the walls until the house was sold many years later.
Shirley’s main passion was expressing herself by creating art and she enrolled in college to pursue that exploration. While at Michigan State University she met her first husband, George Earl. They moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a military family, where her first two children, Sadie and Marc were born. As an officer’s wife, her dream of traveling the world was finally fulfilled. They moved back and forth between the States and Europe, having three more children, Randall, William and David. On October 7th, 1965, George crashed his US Army helicopter in southwest Germany while on active duty and was killed. Shirley did what thousands of military families do every day - she gathered her children and started her civilian life. With five children under the age of 13, Shirley faced the frightening challenge of ‘starting over’. She was able to accomplish the task with grace and dignity.
Shirley moved back to Michigan to be closer to her sisters and parents, and began a career as a realtor. She loved meeting new people and found the perfect way to support herself and raise her five children. She bought her first home in Flushing and had a flair for turning a house into a beautiful home. She always found time to doodle and draw, and continue with her watercolors.
Seven years later she met her 2nd husband, Robert Misekow, and had her 6th child, Melissa. They traveled to Saudi Arabia and lived there for seven years, then Egypt for a few more years before building her dream home in Flushing. She lived her entire life fully and with determination. She stayed active, bowling in her early years, golfing in her later years and always creating art, be it oil, water or stained glass, eventually winning several blue ribbons for her watercolors.
Her faith was very strong and was central to her life of being the good and kind hearted person that she was, she even attempted to play the guitar at St. Robert Catholic Church where she stayed an active parishioner while she lived in Flushing during the summer months.
Shirley is survived by her children; Sadie (Maggie Murray) Birdfeather, Marc (Denise) Earl, Randall Earl, William (Janet) Earl, David (Kathy) Earl, Melissa (Joe) O’Brien; step daughter Carol (Rob Weinert) Evans; grandchildren: Brad Earl, Ryan Earl, Erin Chaffin, Alyx Earl, Hillery Earl, Lily Earl, Andrew Earl, Phoebe O'Brien, Pepper O'Brien; and great-grandchildren: Braden, Londyn, Phoenix, Oliver, Ada and Olyver. She is preceded in death by her husband Robert.
