Joseph Clark Riley, age 74, of Corunna passed away Friday, October 13th, 2023 at Union Court Assisted Living facility in Chesaning. His family was at his side.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11am Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at St. Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Michael O'Brien officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2pm to 8pm with a rosary prayed at 7pm.
Joe was born on May 12th, 1949 in Owosso to Clark and Verna (Sprehe) Riley. He attended Underwood School, a one room schoolhouse, and graduated from Corunna High School class of 1967. Joe attended Michigan State University’s Ag Tech program.
After graduation from MSU Joe was drafted into the Army and served 2 years, 15 months of which was spent in Vietnam.
On November 6th, 1971 he married Phyllis McCartney at St. Robert Catholic Church in Flushing. Together they had 4 children.
Joe was a lifelong farmer and also worked for Kurtz Gravel (now U.S. Concrete) of Flint as a cement truck driver for 25 years. Joe loved the Shiawassee County Fair. Over the years he served on the Fair Board, was a livestock 4-H leader, a crop superintendent, and a teamster in the Draft Horse Barn.
Joe was also involved with the Corunna VFW. He enjoyed helping with Friday night Fish Fries and serving with the Honor Guard at football games and parades.
He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Catholic church where he served as an usher for many years.
After retirement, Joe enjoyed helping his son, son-in-law, brother-in-law, and neighbor with any farm work that was needed. He restored a 77 Oliver tractor that he enjoyed displaying at the tractor show each summer.
Survivors include his wife of almost 52 years, Phyllis; Sons Jeff (Lynn) Riley of Corunna, Travis (April) Riley of Owosso, Adam (Sarrah) Riley of Owosso, and daughter Leann (Justin) Kurney of Corunna; 11 grandchildren Rebekah, Lauren, and Brett Riley, Lucy and Molly Riley, Levi Miller, Layla and Lincoln Riley, and Anna, Melanie, and Martin Kurney. Sister Linda (Dean) Kiesling, Brothers, Fred (Laurie) Riley, and Ron (Polly) Riley. Sisters-in-Law Rosemary Schlaud and Joyce McCartney, Brother-in-Law Tom (Janie) McCartney; several nieces, nephews and their families along with many special cousins.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Clark Riley, Verna Riley and step father Lloyd Matthews. Father-in-law and Mother-in-Law Charles and Adelaide McCartney, Brothers-in-Law, Norm Schlaud and Ed McCartney, and nephews Dan Kiesling and Kalvin Schlaud.
The family would like to give a special thank you to April, Jeri, Michelle, and Amy of Amara Hospice and the staff at Union Court Assisted Living for the love and care that they provided for Joe and the entire family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Corunna FFA Chapter.
