ACKEN, Alfred Woodrow “Fred” – Of Flint, age 97, died Thursday, January 5, 2023 in San Jacinto, California.
Funeral service will be held at 1pm Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Gary Wright officiating.
Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery with Military Honors.
Visitation 11am Wednesday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Alfred was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on September 9, 1925, the son of the late Joseph and Alice (Brooks) Acken and resided in Flint most of his life.
He went to Carman High School up to the 10th grade and had many odd jobs, choosing to go into the U.S. Army for a short time at the end of World War II.
On September 30, 1950 he married Francena Hall in Flint and she preceded him in death on January 1, 2010.
He worked at Buick as a welder, where he retired after 42 years.
Fred enjoyed many activities in his long life, including, fishing, bowling, golfing, woodworking and playing cards.
Surviving are his children, Gayle Vanderlinden and Robert (Marvia) Acken;
grandchildren, Bradford (Jen), Tyler (Laurie), Samantha (Luis), Evan and Nathaniel
great-grandchildren, Harper, Lilli and Everly.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Francena Acken; brother, Robert Acken and twin brother, William Acken.
