NELSON, Jean – of Burton, MI, age 96, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023. Per her wishes, a cremation has taken place and no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice House of Shiawassee (https://shiawasseehospice.org/) or to PAWS Animal Rescue (http://www.pawsanimalrescue.net/).
Iva Jean Riggs was born in Traverse City, Michigan, on April 13, 1927, daughter of the late James Asher Riggs and Edith Pettengill Riggs. She married Auldin H. Nelson in June, 1949, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She and Auldin relocated to Flint, Michigan, built a home and adopted two children – naming them Lori Susan and Paul Gregory.
Jean was a tournament bowler, played golf, and enjoyed playing bridge. She liked gardening, crosswords, jigsaw puzzles, and playing dominoes. She and Auldin travelled all over the world and spent wonderful vacations in the Traverse City and Mackinac Island areas. Jean worked at Sears in the credit department for 20 years, retiring in 1993. Once retired, she moved to Traverse City and worked in many of the shops along Front Street including Michigan Rag, which she managed. After the death of Auldin in 2007, Jean moved back to the Flint area where she lived the remainder of her life.
Jean is survived by her cat, Kirby; her children, Lori (Patrick) Savage and Paul Gregory Nelson. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Nicole (Jon) Wolfin, Andrea (Sean) DeWitt, William Simpson, Stephen (Samantha) Simpson, and Erin Savage; 6 great-grandchildren, Samantha, Jaime, Allylyn, Carey, Andrew and Skye; brother, Melvin (Shirley) Riggs of Wisconsin, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Auldin Nelson, her parents, 4 sisters and 6 brothers.
