Cliber, Richard Merle, of Flushing, age 87, died Friday, August 11, 2023, at his home. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 19, 2023, at Rossell Funeral Home. Pastor Tom Mattiuzzo will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to his wife.
Richard was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on December 9, 1935, the son of John Paul and Anna Mae (Sherry) Cliber. He grew up in Lakemont Pennsylvania before moving to Miami, Florida. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy. He was a Quartermaster on the submarine USS SeaLion II. Richard married Carolyn Shaw on May 20, 1961, in Pennsylvania. He worked for NuVision Optical where he retired from before opening OK Optical in Flushing. Richard was always tinkering with a project and was very innovative. He invented and patented multiple machines for the optical industry. Richard loved to fly, and also enjoyed sailing his boat. He built several homes with friends including his own house. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.
Richard is survived by his wife Carolyn of 62 years; daughters, Cynthia and husband Michael Buonopane, Susan, and husband Philip Handa; daughter-in-law, Gail Cliber; grandchildren, Benjamin Pasciolla, Marcy Pasciolla, Richard Buonopane, Alexander Buonopane, Matthew Cliber, Brenton and wife Erin Cliber, Virginia Wright, Baylee Handa, Bryce Handa; and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Mackenize, and Shelby. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Eleanor, Walter, Elmer, Edward; and beloved son, John Cliber.
