JOHNSTON, Elwood Alvin “Al” – of Grand Blanc, age 88, passed away on July 19, 2022 at Grand Blanc Fields Assisted Living. Cremation has taken place. A Graveside Service will be held 12 PM Saturday, September 10, 2022 at Sunset Hills Cemetery, 4413 Flushing Road, Flint, MI 48504; Rev. Mike Seymour officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association.
Al was born in Taymouth Township, MI on December 7, 1933; the son of the late Carl and Hessie (Nerreter) Johnston. Al graduated from Flint Technical High School in 1952 and then graduated from GMI in 1956. He proudly served his country with the United States Army for two years from 1957 to 1959 as a fire safety and sprinkler inspector.
He married Valerie” Val” Lee McLaren at the Davison United Methodist Church on November 4, 1961 in Davison, Michigan, where they were both on committees and sang in the choir. Al retired from Buick as an Industrial Engineer in 1987 after close to 40 years of loyal service. They moved to Warbler’s Hide-Away in Grayling, Michigan in 1995, where they were active members of the Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church. Al stayed busy with the Masons and Shriners, Kiwanis, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Al and Val traveled to all 50 states.
Al is survived by his daughters: Jill Bethany (the late George) Claxton of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Jayne Patrice (Robert) Carey of Grand Blanc, Michigan; grandchildren: Joshua Everett Claxton, Kayla Bethany (Jeff) King, Emilee Paige Anderson, Evan Boyd Anderson; along with many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Valerie in 2007; and his sister, Marian Ann Bell in 2020.
