“Goose” was born in Flint on December 10, 1926, son of the late Stanley and Sophie (Wtorek) Jasinski. His loves were his family, the sharing of food and stories, discussing his grandkids’ exploits as well as his Polish heritage and polka music. He married Phyllis Smigiel on November 26, 1956, and they have four children – all graduates of Powers Catholic High School. Family outings were blessed with plentiful food, stories, card games and laughter.
He was part of the famed north end tradition. Goose graduated from All Saints in 1944. He earned three varsity letters in basketball and two more in baseball, serving as basketball captain and garnering numerous team and individual awards.
Goose was named All Saints basketball and baseball head coach at the age of 17, and he helped lead his basketball squad to the state quarterfinals; his hoop teams would go on to reel off five district championships. Goose also served as assistant coach of the inaugural All Saints football team in 1947.
He attended Western Michigan University and served in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and 1946.
City league basketball accomplishments were many, including numerous championships, being named to the 1st Team in the Michigan Open Tournament in 1947 and being part of the James Lumber State Champion team in 1951 – that team has been inducted into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame.
Goose and Phyllis have been active members of St. Agnes and All Saints parishes.
He retired from General Motors’ Fisher Body (Ternstedt Coldwater Road Plant) in 1989.
Goose spent a great deal of time on area golf courses, visiting, telling stories, finding treasures and golfing. A longtime member of Dom Polski, the P.L.A.V. Post #8, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion, Goose played a few hands of cards as part of his memberships.
He served as a member of the National Polish American Sports Hall of Fame voting panel since 1992 and as a member of the Greater Flint Area Sports of Hall of Fame Board of Directors since 1993 until his death. Goose also participated in the Flint Sports Old-timers since 1981 and had gathered a treasure trove of city athlete nicknames.
Surviving are wife, Phyllis; daughter Mary Ellen Fox, son-in-law Tom and grandchildren Nick, Mike, Katie, Ian and Cristina Tan; daughter Rosemary Godbey and son-in-law Leigh; son Ken, daughter-in-law Sandy (Beach) and grandchildren Jennifer and Jake; son John, daughter-in-law Denise (Kirby) and grandchildren Matt, Joe, Leah and Lucas; and niece, Marie Plamondon.
