COON, Gwendolyn Marie - passed away peacefully at Hospice of the Valley-Thunderbird Inpatient Care Home, in Glendale AZ, on Wednesday February 7, 2024.
Gwen was born October 14, 1949 in Genesee County, Michigan, to Max O. Coon Sr. and Constance (Platt) Coon of Genesee, Michigan. She graduated Valedictorian of Genesee H.S. in 1967. She was the oldest of 8 siblings and never let her three baby siblings forget that they were 3, 5, and 7 years old for life.
Gwen worked most of her career in a secretarial, office management, accountant and billing specialist capacity for many insurance companies and law firms. She moved to the Valley in 1981 with an insurance company she worked for in Michigan that was expanding to the Arizona market. She remained a Valley resident for the rest of her life, making many, many life-long friends, and retired in 2018 from a prominent law firm in the Valley.
Gwen loved entertaining family and friends. She also enjoyed playing musical instruments including the clarinet, piano, accordion and handbells. She had a beautiful singing voice and performed solos and in ensembles often, even having a chance to perform in several Thurlow Spurr productions with the Michigan Concert Choir. In addition to hosting family and friends, Gwen enjoyed playing Pinochle, Euchre, Dominoes, and many other games, often besting her competition.
Gwen is survived by her siblings, Max O. (Kathy) Coon Jr., Dianne Thomas, Paul (Melody) Coon, John (Mary Anne) Coon, Jody (Wendy) Coon, and Tricia Coon; her nieces, Lisa (Tony) Alghawali, Stephanie Morris, Sandra (Damon) Cole, Alecia (Matt) Campbell, Jacqueline (Michael) Campbell, Gabi Coon, Laura Coon; nephews, Courtney (Kari) Coon, Anthony (Sarah) Thomas, Zachary Coon, Jason (Kendalle) Coon, Nicholas Coon, and many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Fred Coon and Steven Coon; and brother-in-law, Patrick Thomas.
Per her wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held 1 PM Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the World Outreach Center, 2275 N. Irish Rd, Davison, Michigan 48423; Bishop Max O. Coon, Jr. presiding. The family will welcome visitors from 12 PM until the time of the service on Saturday. Donations to Hospice of the Valley (www.hov.org/donate) are very much appreciated.
