In Loving Memory of James Dennis Barcus
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James Dennis Barcus, age 78, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Owosso, who left us on December 5, 2025.
Born on April 21, 1947, in Owosso, James was the cherished son of Darwin Barcus and Odessa Weiser.
James spent his early years in Vernon with his cherished friends John and Gary and his beloved sister Terry. After graduating from Corunna High School, he devoted himself to serving his country with honor in the United States Navy and Army and Air National Guards. His pride in his military service was surpassed only by his love for his family and his commitment to his community.
James had a spirit of adventure and a deep appreciation for nature, often spending time in Michigan’s picturesque Upper Peninsula. He loved visiting the stunning Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the quiet of Copper Harbor, the bustle of Marquette and of course cross-country skiing along serene trails during a snowy UP winter. As a loving father and proud grandfather, spending time with his family was James’s greatest treasure. He spent many days exploring the UP and surrounding states of the Midwest with his grandson Quinn. He showed the beauty of Lake Superior to grandchildren Olive and Emett and always ended as many trips or random days as he could with ice cream at Mama Cow’s in Chatham. While he spent most of his life growing up in the Vernon area and adulthood in Owosso, the UP held his heart.
He is survived by his daughters, Amy Barcus, Melissa (Nick) Michelson, and Amanda (Dennis) Steinbauer; his beloved grandchildren, Quinn Barcus, Olive and Emett Floyd; his sister, Terry Lange; half sisters, Sue (Dave) Tarrant and Chris (Jack) Ellis; step-sisters, Linda (Jim) Letz and Rita (Gary) Burcham; stepmother, Betty Weber; and other loving family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
James was predeceased by his parents.
In honor of James’s legacy, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Valley Spur Cross Country Ski Trail or Michigan Veteran Homes at Grand Rapids.
James will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Friday, January 30, 2026 at 1pm. There will be a celebration later that evening at The Knight of Columbus in Owosso from 4pm to 6pm.
