William "Bill" Hambly

Born: 10/24/1970
Died: 11/26/2021
Age: 51
Community: Flushing, MI

William Allen Hambly (Bill) of Flushing, Michigan, age 51, died peacefully at home with his wife and mother at his side. Cremation has taken place; a memorial service will be planned in the spring.

Bill was born in Saginaw, Michigan on October 24, 1970 to P. Dawn (Gauthier) and Frederick J. Hambly, the first of two children, and spent his childhood and youth in Lansing. He worked for the Michigan Department of Corrections as a prison Corrections Officer in Jackson until Multiple Sclerosis forced him into early retirement.

He married Sarah Woodring-Vollen on November 25, 2018.

He was a Jeep enthusiast, and he loved fishing when he was able. One of the happiest days of his life was a fishing trip with his mother and stepfather, who found a charter captain and mate who would lift him and his wheelchair into and out of the boat. He enjoyed luncheon meetings with Lansing's MS groups. He loved music, particularly the Deftones, whose bassist was his beloved cousin. Music was a comfort to him in his last months. He was a lover of animals and they knew it. Bill was a civil rights advocate to his core, and he never stopped attending to civil rights news or voting. He was never fond of attention but would often slip one-liners into a conversation that would leave a room laughing.

Despite the numerous challenges he faced, including total quadriplegia by his mid 40s, Bill never lost his sweet disposition, kind nature, strong ethics, and incredible sense of humor. He loved dearly his family, friends, and life. He will be so missed.

Bill was predeceased by three dear cousins, Chi Yin Cheng, Chi Tien Cheng, and Chi Ling (Dai) Cheng.

Bill is survived by his wife Sarah; stepchildren Jade (Adam) Rose, Nadia Bemrose, Gavin Vollen, and Ava Vollen; grandchildren Sophia, Juliet, and Emmilia, to whom he was Papa; his mother Dawn Hambly and her partner Bill Scavarda; his father Dr. Frederick Hambly and his partner Joey Latterman; his beloved sister Laura (James) Gandy and their children Geovanni, Jhmel, Destiny, and Tayy; and aunts, uncles, and cousins too numerous to list. He is also survived by his former wife Lisa Grescowle Hambly and her mother Sharon Grescowle who was a second mother to him for many years.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jayne Ward and the wonderful staff at the MSU Department of Neurology, McLaren Hospice, Medilodge of Okemos, and Maple Woods Manor of Clio for their tender and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
