Dennis Lee Thompson passed away peacefully with family by his side after a prolonged illness with cancer on Friday, July 28, 2023. Dennis was 69 years old.
Dennis was born March 30, 1954 in Highland Park, Michigan, the eldest born to Donald and Betty Thompson, as the eldest to five brothers and sisters. Dennis graduated from Byron High School in 1973. He joined the United States Army soon after and served his country with pride and honor. He loved being a veteran and was proud of the service he gave to his country. Dennis was based in Germany serving from 1973 to 1975 as a mechanic in the Army, after which he was honorably discharged. He earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Marksman M16 Medal during his time.
Dennis married Helen Elizabeth Crumback on November 30, 1979 at Trinity Methodist Church. They made their home in Owosso for many years before moving to Nebraska for 3 years. They returned to Michigan where they raised their 3 children. Dennis worked as a mechanic for many different shops over the years and he followed in his father's footsteps and drove trucks for a living. Dennis enjoyed time with his family and grandchildren above all else. He was a kind and loving husband to his wife, Helen and a proud father to his 3 grown children, 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild on the way. Most recently, Dennis and Helen have made their home at Fiddler's Green in Corunna, Michigan; a welcoming home for veterans and their spouses.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Helen Thompson; children, Elizabeth Dufern Thompson, Katrina Thompson and William Thompson; his grandchildren, siblings and his mother, Betty Thompson. Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Donald Thompson; brother, William Thompson; grandparents, and daughter-in-law, Tiffany Thompson.
A memorial gathering with fellowship from 12:00 - 2:00 PM at the Fiddler's Green, 729 S. Norton St., Corunna, MI 48817 on Saturday, August 5, 2023. Final interment will take place at Great Lake National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Dennis has requested donations be made in his name to Fiddler's Green to assist veterans in need.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel where online condolences may be shared |
