Frederick Leroy Burkhardt, Jr., 63, of Lapeer 55 plus years, died after health problems mounted against him since last fall, he died Saturday January 20, 2024. Fred was born August 17, 1960 in Goodrich to parents Frederick and Janice (Jancar) Burkhardt, Sr. Fred married his college sweetheart, Martha A. Kunkle on May 21, 1983 in Trenton.
Fred worked a few years in fabrication, welding as a pipe fitter in Texas. Returning to Michigan, he worked his way up at Cadillac Iron of Oxford (formerly in Sterling Heights). Fred’s valuable knowledge of all parts of fabrication to estimating, made him a natural to join ownership and title of vice president, until 2013. He continued working in the industry until retiring in 2017. Aside from his work life, Fred played football at Western Michigan University from 1978-1981 which certainly played a part in him volunteer coaching for Lapeer West High School for eight years. In his time coaching, he was primarily the offensive line coach and enjoyed coaching both of his sons while there. His boys reflect on Fred’s love of the outdoors that he instilled in them; from hunting, enjoying competitive and recreational target shooting with his sons and grandchildren, to fishing, especially salmon. Combining outdoors and competition, was Fred’s love of golfing with family and friends. Particularly hopping on the golfcart at home and driving to the Country Club for a round, along side Martha.
Fred is survived by his wife of forty years: Martha, sons: Steven (Laurie) Burkhardt of Kalamazoo, David Burkhardt of Lapeer, grandchildren: Iris and Piper, parents: Frederick and Janice Burkhardt, Sr., siblings: Stacy (Larry) Moyer, Marianne (Mark) Schlaud, Janet Burkhardt and Andy (Michelle) Burkhardt as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Al and Geraldine Pollard and John and Frances Jancar.
Following Fred’s own wishes, cremation has been entrusted with Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The family will be hosting a celebration of life gathering, Sunday February 25, 2024, 1:00-5:00pm at Lapeer Country Club, 3786 Hunt Rd., 48446.
